Senior Pastor Job Description

Our requirements and expectations for our next pastor begin of course with the Bible.

  • In accordance with Ephesians 4:11, he must have received a calling from God to be a pastor.
  • In accordance with Titus 1:7-8, his temperament must reflect hospitality, goodness, uprightness, self-control, and the grace to put aside arrogance, a quick temper, and greed.
  • In accordance with Titus 1:9, the word of God must be central to his life and his faith, his training and his teaching.
  • In accordance with 1 Peter 5:1-4, he must be a shepherd, leading by example rather than domination.

These Biblical standards form the basis of the vision for our next pastor that we stated at the beginning of our Church Profile:

  • Being firmly grounded in the Word of God through education, ongoing study, and devotions, he will stand firm in the Word, and by it instruct in sound doctrine and refute those who contradict it.
  • Being hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined, he will model a total commitment to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord at home, in the church, and in the community.
  • Being called by God, and being centered on the Word of God, he will preach and teach the Word with power, clarity, and grace.

Based on the mission, history, and makeup of Calvary Community Church, we have certain further expectations for our next senior pastor:

  • His training in the Word should include a graduate degree from an accredited seminary with principles consistent with our Tenets of Faith.
  • His ministry experience should include service at a church with a multi-pastor staff, equipping him to:
       • serve as a pastor and mentor to all staff members
       • oversee the staff with a balance between discretion and direction, independence and accountability

  • He needs to have a vision for Calvary Community Church, and
       • the communication skills to articulate that vision
       • the relational skills to create a team committed to carrying out that vision
       • the leadership skills to guide the congregation in achieving that vision

We recognize that the standards and expectations we've set out are high.  In fact, who but our Lord Himself could ever meet them all?  So we want to assure you that we won't expect perfection.  We know our next pastor will be someone like ourselves - sinful, but redeemed;  seeing through the glass darkly, but striving for the light;  aware of the imperfections of any congregation, but pressing on together in the calling of the Bride of Christ.
